KEITH BARRELL
Artist's Profile

Keith was born in 1939, trained initially at Rochdale School of Art, before transferring to Hammersmith College of Art to gain his N.D.D., Specialising in Sculpture. He then moved to Hornsey College of Art in 1960, to gain his PGCE qualification.

His working career has contributed to Art Education at all levels,

as:

- Head of Art Department , at Crown Woods School (Co-ed,11-18)

-

Lecturer II, NW London Polytechnic , establishing a 3-year Degree Course in Ceramics for Specialist Art teachers.
- General and Specialist Inspector for Art and Design across all levels of KCC educational establishments.

Keith elected to take early retirement from Kent in 1989, in order to become an Independent Art Consultant and Adviser. For the past 15 years, his own creative drive, working directly from the life model has produced Drawings, Watercolours and life-size Sculptures.

He joined Edexcel as an External Moderator, before becoming Principal Moderator for GCSE Art and Design, finally retiring in 2004, to establish his personal, full-time, studio practice.

His creative ideas constantly expand through his figurative, stylised and abstracted analysis, often inspired by Landscape, Natural, and ‘found', or ‘recorded' objects within the environment.

Currently he works directly on canvas, to allow him to experiment by creating surfaces that ‘empathise' with a chosen source. His paintings are heavily layered, accentuated and tactile, often utilising natural materials, paper or card, that best meet the aesthetic feature of his source, thus forming a richly textured ground as his foundation for colour.
